[Introduction]Digi-Key Electronics, a global distributor of Electronic components and automation products with abundant supply and fast delivery, recently held a grand ribbon-cutting event for the company’s product distribution center expansion project (PDCe). After the project was put into operation, the company headquarters The resulting footprint expanded by 2.2 million square feet to a total of more than 3 million square feet. The new facility will allow Digi-Key to pick, pack and ship goods to customers in more than 180 countries around the world at nearly triple the current daily average of 27,000 packages.
Digi-Key has officially opened a 2.2 million square foot Product Distribution Center Expansion (PDCe) with Digi-Reel cutting and ceremonial parcel handover
At the opening ceremony, Digi-Key officially performed the Digi-Reel cutting and ceremonial handover of the first package with the company’s four carrier partners, DHL, FedEx, UPS and USPS. Digi-Key President Dave Doherty, local government officials and several other Digi-Key executives spoke.
“This is an important milestone for all Digi-Key employees and our community,” said Dave Doherty, Digi-Key President. “Our new product distribution center expansion will help us continue to serve our customers well for years to come. . While this expansion is exciting for us, we don’t want our customers to actually feel any difference – hopefully the transition should be seamless for them, if at all. , it should also be a better experience for them than the service they are already used to. It’s for us to be more deeply involved in Thief River Falls and continue to be committed to investing in this community and the state of Minnesota .”
The product distribution center expansion project building was designed by Widseth of Minnesota, with McShane Construction serving as the general contractor for the project. KNAPP, a leader in warehouse logistics and automation, has partnered with Digi-Key on in-house automation and operational equipment.
Minnesota DEED Commissioner Steve Grove noted, “Minnesota is pleased to celebrate Digi-Key today as it enters a new phase of growth. Reaching this level of growth is a victory for Digi-Key employees and a victory for the Thief River Falls community. , and a victory for Minnesota. The opening of this facility would not be possible without local and state economic support, while adding $500 million in local economic output and adding more than 1,000 new jobs.”
The opening of the facility comes at a time of record growth for the company – Digi-Key recorded an unprecedented 65% growth rate in 2021, while bookings for 2022 are up more than 25% from last year. This year was also one of the company’s largest new suppliers, with 250 new suppliers to date. Since construction began in 2018, Digi-Key has added 1,500 suppliers and 1.5 million more products to the company’s warehouses.
The new facility is nearly fully automated, and the only task that’s really done by hand is actually picking components. Between the component racks, the trolley is guided by a line patrol, so the only thing the trolley driver has to worry about is where to stop. The line patrol guidance system saves more than 10% of the time and is safer.
The product distribution center expansion project is equipped with two primary conveyor systems to provide backup in the event of failure of other conveyor systems and to be put into use in the future when business increases. In the planning and design of the new building, the first consideration is scalability and development potential, and most of the space on the fourth floor is temporarily opened. With more than 27 miles of automated conveyor belts in the new facility, an average order will travel more than 3,200 feet within the building.
The building houses six backup diesel engines and diesel pumps as well as a water tank for fire fighting. It also has its own storm drains and runoff ponds to prevent any flooding in the community.
This modern facility features multiple communal work areas and lounges with floor-to-ceiling windows for optimal natural light. The facility also features the Two Rivers Café, which offers everything from ready-to-eat salads and wraps to hamburgers and panini sandwiches made to order. Local vendor Las Ranitas also serves authentic Mexican food at the café two days a week.
Digi-Key is rated as a breastfeeding-friendly workplace by the state of Minnesota, and there are 16 private maternity rooms throughout PDCe for employees returning from maternity leave. The building also features spacious silent rooms for employees to rest, relax and rejuvenate.
Outside the new facility is a community garden where employees can choose a small plot to grow seasonal flowers, fruits and vegetables during the summer. On the sky bridge connecting the original PDC and PDCe buildings, a “Digi-Walk” is planned between the two ends, providing a good place for employees to take some extra walking activities during breaks.
Sustainability was also considered during the planning and construction of the facility. The roof is fitted with a white membrane to reflect the sun’s heat, LED lights with sensors minimise electricity use, and a specially designed delivery system maximises energy efficiency.
